| Stems: | | Trailing or climbing vine 3 to 10 feet long, simple or branched, finely pubescent, somewhat twining. | | Leaves: | | Alternate, simple, slender-stalked, triangular in outline, 1 to 2.5 inches long, .5 to 2 inches wide, finely hairy; bases arrowhead-shaped, basal lobes large, rounded, directed outward; margins entire; tips blunt or rarely pointed; blades are at an angle of nearly 90 degrees with the stalk. | | Inflorescences: | | Solitary flowers, on stalks 1 to 2 inches long, mostly in lower leaf axils, often fewer than 4 flowers per plant. | | Flowers: | | Funnel-shaped, 1.5 to 2 inches long, 2 to 3 inches wide; bracts 2, prominent, leaf-like, ovate, .75 to 1 inch long, 2/5 to 3/5 inch wide, pubescent, concealing calyx; sepals 5, elliptic to ovate, nearly equal; margins transparent; tips pointed; corollas funnel-shaped, 5-lobed, white to pinkish; stamens 5. | | Fruits: | | Capsules, spherical, brown; seeds 1-4, smooth, blackish. | | Habitat: | | Disturbed lowlands, roadsides, fence rows, and thickets, most abundant in moist soils. | | Distribution: | | Throughout Kansas. | | Comments: | | Hedge bindweed is not as aggressive a weed as field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis). Field bindweed has smaller flowers and lacks the large, leafy bracts at the base of the calyx. |
